Module Skins / Containers
|
|
|
|
Module Skins, or Containers, are the design elements and characteristics implemented to frame modules on a web page. One Container holds one Module.
The basic elements of module skins are Outline Container Designs (or frames) and Module Components (or "skin objects").
An Outline Container Design defines the appearance of the rectangular region that the module will be inserted into. This design can be extremely simple (e.g. an undecorated rectangular area) or as complex as desired (rich graphic designs outlining the borders of the rectangular area).
Typical core Module Components that can be defined to be inserted within the module skin include: Title, Icon, Edit, Menu, Visibility and Printer. Some components are only available for Administrator usage (portal development and maintenance). Additional custom module components can also be developed to extend a module's functionality.
The Menu component (typically displayed as a “down arrow” icon) is presented to Administrators and to Accounts that are Authorized to edit the module. A popup menu is displayed when hovering over this icon. When logged in as an Administrator, additional menu items are presented to edit, reposition, configure and maintain the module.
The Visibility component (typically displayed as “+” and "-" icons) allows the user to expand and collapse the module's content.
The Printer component (typically displayed as a “printer” icon) opens a new web page displaying only the give module's content for easy printing. |
The width of a module skin can be defined to be a fixed predetermined width, to take up only the space required by its content or to stretch to fill the entire available width (within the content pane).
Typically, several module skins are designed in coordination with Page Skins and CSS (Cascaded Style Sheets) to integrate and manage the overall style coordination.
You can use Module Skins from different Skin Packages on the same page ... if it works! Besides the obvious issues of color and general design, various other considerations - spacing, fonts, sizes, etc. - will determine how well a given module skin works on the page.
Some examples of Module Skins are presented on this page, as well as some style conflict issues that may occur when freely using containers from different skin packages.
Blue Discus Systems provides expert services in Module Skin design. We design and develop all of the graphics, layout and special features to coordinate with your Page Skin(s) and to give you the functionality and flexibility that you require.

Some containers (including this one) are not displayed as fully intended because of CSS Style conflicts between the containers. Though these problems can be fixed, we have left them "as-is" to illustrate the issue.
