Modules

A Portal Module is a discrete unit of web content and/or functionality that is presented within a rectangular area and that can be reused and reconfigured elsewhere within your portal site. A portal module can contain virtually anything, including simple text (like this) as well as web applications and web XML services.

FREE CORE MODULES

A set of Free Core Modules comes with the DotNetNuke portal engine to get you started with basic content and functionality.  See the listing below.

ADMINISTRATION MODULES

Various management, configuration and utility modules for portal and host administrators are also provided for free within the DotNetNuke engine, including Security Roles, User Accounts, Host Settings, Portal Settings, Site Settings, User Accounts, File Manager, Security Roles, Skins, Search AdministrationSite Log & Viewer, Module Definitions, Newsletters, LanguagesScheduler, File Manager, Recycle Bin, and Vendor Services, as well as facilities to create and manage portal pages and to place and manage modules within portal pages.

CUSTOM MODULES

New functionality and presentations can be developed in new custom modules, and existing modules can be customized (or replaced) to extend their functionality. Many third-party developers (world-wide) offer a wide variety of Custom Modules for both web content and Adminstration functions. Most third-party Custom Modules are FREE or inexpensive.

Core Modules

Account LogIn
The Account LogIn module permits users to log in to your portal. See sample in the left pane on this page.

Announcements
The Announcements Module produces a list of simple text announcements consisting of a title, a brief description and an optional link for more information. See sample in the left pane on this page.

Banner
Banner advertising is managed through the Admin > Vendors tab and the Host > Vendors tab. You can select the number of banners to display as well as the banner type. See sample in the right pane on this page. In this simple example, there several banners with 3 displayed at a time (revisit or refresh the page to see the banner selection change).

Blog
A richly featured Blog (Web Log) module. Click Here for sample Blogs.

Contacts
Renders contact information for a group of people, for example a project team. Click Here for sample Contacts.

Discussion
Renders a group of messages posted on a specific topic. This is basically a light-weight Forum from the initial release of DotNetNuke. See the Forum module for a better solution.

Documents
Renders a list of documents, including links to browse or download the document. Click Here for sample Documents.

Events List/Calendar
Renders a list of upcoming events, including time and location. The events list can alternately be set to render in calendar format. See sample Calendar in the left pane on this page and sample Event List in the right pane of this page.

FAQs
FAQs allow you to manage a list of Frequently Asked Questions and their corresponding Answers. NOTE: The core version relies on calling the web server to open each answer, which degrades performance. Better performace is achievable with a Custom Module that opens and closes answers directly in the web page without calling the web server. See sample in the left pane on this page.

Feedback
Feedback allows visitors to send messages to the Administrator of the portal. If a user is already logged in, then their name will automatically populate the form. See sample at the bottom of the Contact page.

Forum
A richly featured Forum module. Click Here to visit our Forums.

Gallery
A richly featured Gallery module for presented albums of photographs and other media. NOTE: This module is currently a Beta version with several stability and configuration issues reported. Though the design promises a robust and flexible solution, a stable version may not be available until the release of the next version of the DotNetNuke portal engine. See Custom Modules for alternate solutions.

IFrame
IFrame is an Internet Explorer browser feature which allows you to display content from another website within a frame on your site.

Image
Renders an image. The module simply refers to the image by a relative or absolute URL, so the image file does not need to reside within the site. This module is used in many places in this portal.

Links
This module renders a list of hyperlinks to any tab, image or file on your website; or to a file, image or web page on another website. See sample in the right pane of the Home page.

News Feed (RSS)
Renders news feeds on you site. News feeds provide your visitors with up-to-date, topical information on any range of topic. Click Here for sample News Feed.

Search
Powerful portal seaches indexing most (if not all) portal content. See sample at the top heading of this page.

Survey
The Survey module allows your website users complete online surveys. Survey results are rendered as a bar chart and includes the number of individual responses. See sample in the right pane on this page.

Text/HTML
Design content in a visual editor, or add html. Includes a picture gallery of all your uploaded images. Numerous examples of this module appear throughout this portal, including the one you are reading.

User Accounts
The User Account module permits Registered Users to add, edit and update their User Account details. Membership services are also managed here. See sample by clicking the My Profile menu item at top or by clicking either Register or your name (if logged in) in the heading area at top.

User Defined Table
The User Defined Table allows you to create a custom data table for managing tabular information. Note that clicking on a heading reorders the data A-Z or Z-A. Click Here for sample User Defined Table.

Users Online
Users Online allows you to see who is online in your portal, and see membership counts. See sample on the bottom right of the Home page.

XML/XSL
This module renders the result of an XML/XSL transform. The XML and XSL files are identified by their UNC paths in the xmlsrc and xslsrc properties of the module.
